Just Play Nice I got this crazy idea, such a crazy idea. It really was my mama’s advice. I was thinking of us and thinking of them and thinking we should just play nice. If you see someone who is suffering, don’t hesitate to stand by their side. ‘Cause if you’re not nice, we all pay the price, there’s really no place to hide. My mama said it’s all fun and games up until somebody gets hurt You gotta say something nice or nothing at all, it’s so simple it just might work. Say, “Hi my friend.” Say, “You look good.” Say, “Let me try to understand.” Say, “What can I do?” Say, “How can I help?” Say, “C’mon man, I’ll give you hand.” I got this crazy idea, such a crazy idea. It really was my mama’s advice. I was thinking of us and thinking of them and thinking we should just play nice. And there’ll be no more of “us” and “them” if “us and them” just play nice.

Misty In The Morning I get misty in the morning, angry in the afternoon. By the time the sun goes down I’m floating like a lead balloon I burrow in my blanket as if I’ve got the flu. Oh, I’ve come down with the blues A little human touch is what I miss so much; there ain’t no guarantees I’m looking for some hope but all I get is nope and it’s dropped me to my knees, and I get (chorus) I’m searching for a God sign, maybe just some sunshine peeking out behind a cloud Would it be so hard if we all let down our guard; now I’m just thinking out loud….’cause I’m so (chorus) I’m just a call away is what you always say and it ain’t no lie But I’d do a happy dance if you ever had the chance to say you’re coming by…’cause I’m all (chorus) Yes, I’ve come down with the blues. You bet, I've come down with the blues

Refugee's Lament I’m crossing deserts, I’m crossing mountains, I’m crossing forests, I’m crossing streams I’m leaving all that is familiar to cross the border of broken dreams I’m leaving my mother, leaving my father; they insisted they had to stay I’ll never see them, I’ll never hug them, I’ll never kiss them after today And I hope we’ll be saved by love, I hope we’ll be saved by love. There’s so much vengeance, so much brutality, so much fury and so much hate We were not safe there, we couldn’t stay there, we had to leave there, had to escape I thought this war was just a skirmish, just a conflict to be policed But now I wonder which generation will say we finally can live in peace And I hope we’ll be saved by love, I hope we’ll be saved by love. I miss my language, my easy lifestyle, the meals we shared, the games we played I miss the joking, my native clothing, I miss my family and friends who stayed I dream oppression, greed and violence will forever leave us alone I dream my children one day can go back, back to the land that I once called home And I hope we’ll be saved by love, I hope we’ll be saved by love, I hope we will be saved, and I hope we’ll be saved by love.

Love On Rivers She was floating down the river and met him at Shady Beach Can’t say he was the man of her dreams but clearly within reach. His front tooth black from a rope swing; he came back and hit the tree All her teeth are turning brown; she smoked since she was three And that dragon on his belly grows bigger every year And somehow she has found a way to wear bottle caps in her ears…that’s right, bottle caps in her ears Finding love on rivers, gives me the shivers. but if love, for them delivers, then love will find you too. That bracelet locked on his ankle… “wrong place at the wrong time” He says to err is human but escaping is divine He says she must be an angel God sent down from a cloud And then she breaks into a song but she sings way too loud His jorts sag in the water; he's got a metal plate in his head Because she says that fools rush in where angels fear to tread… he goes where angels fear to tread When his mom died he got a new tattoo; so sweet, it’s a dead rose And everybody noticed ‘cause he got it on his nose And the only thing she doesn’t like, he doesn’t shave his neck But she don’t shave her ankles, so I guess, what the heck. And he also has some whiskers creepin’ damn near to his eyes He says those whiskers keep away mosquitoes and the flies… that’s’ gross, mosquitoes and the flies Finding love on rivers, gives me the shivers. But if love, for them delivers, then love will find you too. Her dog runs ‘round unruly; of course it is half pit I’ve seen it pee on people’s beer before they take a sip He's got Garth Brooks blaring from his truck; his battery will die His rear wheels in the river spitting sand in people’s eyes Now it goes without me saying he wears a wife beater t-shirt And it is stained with blood and beer from when he hits the dirt… oh, he often hits the dirt They’ve got a big old cooler but it doesn’t have a lid So they have to drink beer fast before the ice melts, God forbid He looks as mad as a hatter, but he’d never hurt a fly He’s missing some grey matter, but he’s the sweetest guy When she topples from her lawn chair he knows just what she needs He throws her a Jello shot, he’s a good man, guaranteed… Indeed, he’s a good man, guaranteed Finding love on rivers, gives me the shivers. But if love, for them delivers, then love will find you too. I am a firm believer that love will find you too.

Mostly You 04:10
Mostly You Slip-n-slides; pony rides; playing kickball, choosing sides Shoebox full of cool cassettes; sneaking out with cigarettes Flashlight tag; front porch flag; Last one there is a rotten egg Lightning bugs in mayonnaise jars; cicada nights, counting stars There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. Basement shows; tie dyed clothes; watching mud squish through our toes Building forts, just girls allowed; watch Psycho and scream out loud Bottle rocket wars at night; Careful - you’ll put out an eye So much nerve, so much hair; pot pie dinners, bedtime prayers There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. Riding bikes, nature hikes, people said we were “look-alikes” Chasing down the ice cream man; don’t let that screen door slam Inside the fence we’d pitch our tents; up all night without parents Ghost stories ‘til we got scared; and then a game of truth or dare, There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. There are many things I miss tonight but …. mostly you. There are many things I miss tonight .....but mostly you. There are so many things I miss but …. mostly you.

Nowhere Fast 02:09
Nowhere Fast That boy is goin nowhere fast I’m thinkin that his future will look just like his past He ain’t goin’ from here to there, No he ain’t goin anywhere That boy is goin nowhere fast That boy is goin nowhere fast He learned in Sunday School the first shall be last When he was young his mom was proud, Now she just yells “for crying out loud Boy, you’re going nowhere fast” Along about noon he leaves his bed Then he plops down on the couch instead Checks his phone, grabs the remote Then goes through the pantry like a barnyard goat That boy is going nowhere fast He is just so lazy, that I am quite impressed Change a light bulb, chop onion, Or mow the grass, it don’t get done That boy is going nowhere fast. Along about noon he leaves his bed Then he plops down on the couch instead Checks his phone, scratches his crotch The whole damn thing is getting’ hard to watch. That boy is goin nowhere fast Everyone’s concerned, but he’s having a blast His To Do list ain’t a lot: it’s 1. Drink beer 2. Smoke pot That boy is going nowhere fast That boy is goin nowhere fast

Ozark Dream 03:37
Ozark Dream If I were to stand upon that rock and cast your name to the valley far down below I would hear my own name echo through the hills because they go together don’t you know. And if I were to float upon that winding river, would I find you wading near the shore? You would tip your straw hat and I would pass some moonshine to you on the end of my oar. But dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars. You were never meant for me. If I were to run across the meadow would you meet me in suspenders with blue flowers in your hand? Gazing out as far as we could see, you would tell me that one day all of this would be our land. You’d whistle O Susanna while you make a daisy chain and place it so gently in my hair...Pull me down into the tall and waving grasses and kiss me; not one soul would find us there. But dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars. You were never meant for me. If you were to knock upon my door I would say nothing but I might blush before I look away. And you would brush so close to me that I’d pretend we’re dancing to the fiddle with a slow and steady sway. And I’d pretend my sister did not run into your arms and offer you some warm bread from the stove. And I’d pretend you winked at me and I’d pretend you wanted me to meet you later down at Stovall's Grove. But dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars You were never meant for me. Dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars; you were never meant for me Dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars; you were never meant for me Dreams just go so far when I wish on falling stars...

Keeping My Distance They say no matter what you should always trust your gut and now I know it to be true Because I saw your police mug looking guilty and smug So I’m keeping my distance from you. I know what you did to the cat and you know what they say about that…they say it’s a pretty good clue No, it’s a guarantee you’re a psychopath trainee So I’m keeping my distance from you. If you take 2 steps forward, then I’ll take 3 steps back I can’t let down my guard If I see you on my road I’ll change my zip code So I’m not between a rock and a place that is hard Was I out of my damn mind; I was trying to be kind though you have a twisted point of view But you’re a ne’er do well who belongs in a cell So I’m keeping my distance from you. If you take 2 steps forward, then I’ll take 3 steps back I can’t let down my guard If I see you on my road I’ll change my zip code So I’m not between a rock and a place that is hard There really is no tellin’ what a crazy felon might dream up and actually do I try to have a heart but I’m trying to be smart So I’m keeping my distance from you Yes, I try to have a heart but I’m trying to be smart So I’m keeping my distance from you

Tired 02:11
Tired When you tell me how clever you are And you tell me how you travel so far And your tell me you should write a memoir I get tired; oh I get tired of listening to you. When you tell me how much you make And you tell me that you don’t make mistakes I can tell you it’s all I can take ‘cause I ‘m tired, oh I’m just tired of listening to you Don’t you care what I did today? Don’t you care what I have to say? My mind starts to wander and my ears just ache. Oh, listening to you. When you tell me about all your plans Grab a napkin and draw diagrams I start holding my head in my hands ‘Cause I’m tired; oh I’m just tired of listening to you Don’t you care what I did today? Don’t you care what I have to say? My mind starts to wander and my ears just ache. Oh, listening to you. When you tell me you have to admit You’re fanatic about keeping fit I just wonder, do you ever quit? ‘Cause I’m tired; Oh, I’m just tired Yes, I get tired of listening to you

If The Snow Ever Melts If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines I’ll find my way back to you Kicking ‘round in my head all those things that I said That you took exception to What I want to do is prove it to you That I’ll stick with you through thick and thin If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines again. I feel a cool breeze, it’s such a deep freeze That you are holed up in your room I said too many things that I didn’t mean; Too many things I just assumed Your shoulder is cold and all of those things that I told You I’d like to trade in If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines again. Well the cold and the wind are never a friend When they blow between you and your love When you don’t think twice about rolling your eyes, I know enough is enough The air has a chill but I know I will Apologize soon as I can If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines again. If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines I’ll find my way back to you Kicking ‘round in my head all those things that I said That you took exception to What I want to do is prove it to you That I’ll stick with you through thick and thin If the snow ever melts and the sun ever shines again.

Come Back 03:28
Come Back I only knew a thing or two about you. But I didn’t know I couldn’t go to sleep without you. I fought those tender thoughts I had about you to Come back, come back, for me. A little fling, really no big thing is what they all say Then try to hide what’s going on inside the next day I got burned ‘cause I always learn the hard way Come back, come back, for me. I wonder if you thought our kiss was something special Or did our touch not mean too much; it’s only flesh, well I wish you knew just a thing or two about me…. I didn’t plan to meet a man with your eyes I was doing well when it seems you fell from the clear blue skies I don’t regret that we ever met, though my heart cries to Come back, come back for me I wonder if you thought our kiss was something special Or did our touch not mean too much; it’s only flesh, well I wish you knew just a thing or two about me…. I only knew a thing or two about you. I didn’t know I couldn’t go to sleep without you. Since you split hope you get your wits about you and Come back, come back, for me. Come back, come back, for me. Come back, come back, for me.

June Bugs 03:19
June Bugs Something’s going on, what it is I can’t say, but there are June bugs on the first day of May. Something’s going on, it rubs me the wrong way - June bugs on the first day of May. Saw crape myrtles blooming in Koochiching County, saw a bear lumber across Hwy 10 Cicadas now sing all night long; hear mountain lions now and again. Kudzu covered a cow standing still. Floods took the White’s weathervane. Smoke from the fires rise higher and higher as the hills are crying for rain. Something’s going on, what it is I can’t say, but there are June bugs on the first day of May. Something’s going on, it rubs me the wrong way - June bugs on the first day of May. I saw snow down in Houston; Bar Harbor endured a heat wave like never before. And what is surprising, the tide just keeps rising and washing away the whole shore. Saw geese flying south and geese flying north this year on the Fourth of July. And a the craziest sight - all the starlight is fading away in the sky. Something’s going on, what it is I can’t say, but there are June bugs on the first day of May. Something’s going on, it rubs me the wrong way - June bugs on the first day of May. There’s a shortage of shrimp and a surplus of soy; good tomatoes are so hard to find. I don’t know what the heck’s going on, but I’m thinking that we’re in a bind. I remember those nights when fireflies lit up the meadow like sparks from a fire. But now just a few come into view and I think that I preach to the choir…when I say Something's going on, what it is I can't say, but there are June bugs on the first day of May. Something’s going on, it rubs me the wrong way - June bugs on the first day of May. Something’s going on, and we’re all gonna pay for June bugs on the first day of May.

Again, My Friend Oh, oh, don’t want you to go. But I know, I know, that you gotta go. When you’re thinking of me know that I’m thinking of you. But, oh, don’t want you to go. Hey, hey, be safe. Away, away is a dangerous place. The miles that come between us will not keep us far apart But, hey, be safe. Again, my friend, we’ll meet again. But I tend to spend my days wondering when. The next time I see you we will stay up all night long Again, my friend. Oh, oh, don’t want you to go. But I know, I know that you gotta go. When you're thinking of me know that I'm thinking of you But, oh, I don’t want you to go.

about

This album has songs written in the past decade, recorded pre-Covid, supplemented by friends and fine tuned in 2022, and finally released. Thanks for listening!

released April 4, 2022

Cover art by Julia Marting. The photo is my friend Steve and his childhood buddies. They look like they’re up to no good.
This album was recorded at Blue Lotus Recordings in St. Louis, Missouri at the very capable direction of Paul Niehaus IV. Paul also added bass and mandolin on several tracks, and harmonica on Nowhere Fast, and harmony on Refugee's Lament. Sarah Heuermann fiddled all the songs in one fell swoop, and also added background vocals here and there. I wrote all the songs, both music and lyrics, and play either guitar, banjo, and/or harmonica. It’s my therapy.
